RTC module, what's more to say?

posted by pcmihnea on 09/20/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
At $3.50 you get a module consisting of a DS1307 RTC IC, a 24C32AN EEPROM chip for extended usage, plus a LIR2032 Lithium-Ion 3.6V battery. The module came with the battery pre-installed (at almost full capacity, considering that it's autonomy is several ye...
    Cons:
The fact that it lacks pins isn't a disadvantage, depending on your application (you can easily solder straight or 90 degrees p...

Useful visual output for your projects!

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Even though it's a bit more expensive than the parts them self, the fact that you receive a pre-made and tested module of good quality may prove more advantageous. The board itself contains the LED matrix, the 2 capacitors critical for correct operation, an...
    Cons:
Maybe the price? Also it would have been good to have other LED colors to choose from (besides red), or even multicolored (even...

Great solutions for 3.3V development boards!

posted by pcmihnea on 09/20/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
I recently bought an Arduino Due board, of which it's GPIO pins operate at 3.3V, not 5V as other boards do. Instead of improvising a level converter myself, I decided it's best to buy a already made and tested one. Even though it only has 4 bidiractional po...
    Cons:
None. The fact that it's pins aren't soldered is actually an advantage, considering that some would wish to solder 90 degrees o...

Great way to transmit digital sound!

posted by pcmihnea on 09/20/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
If you wish to transmit digital 7.1 audio over short to medium distances inside your house, but don't/can't use HDMI, this is the second-best way to accomplish that. Due to it's small diameter, it's relatively easy to use it, taking care as to not bend it (...
    Cons:
None, the light loss is barely visible compared to the 1.8 meter one, and because it's just a multi-fiber cable, it's invulnera...

    Great Arduino Due-compatible board!

posted by pcmihnea on 09/20/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
I am aware that not buying one of the official boards means not supporting the Arduino project, but unfortunately I'm more limited at how much money I can spend. At 2/3~1/2 of the price of the official one, I get the same(?) performances. So, that's still s...
    Cons:
The board color could have been better, plus the silkscreen's quality is quite unsatisfying for those keen on the details, but ...

    Useful for electronics projects!

posted by pcmihnea on 09/20/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Way easier and comfortable than making your own. Being a flat-cable flex, you can simply tear away any amount of cable for your projects, or tear each one individually for experiments. Great color coding (10 colors), good quality, decent length.
    Cons:
The price maybe? And it could have been a bit longer, but it depend on what you use them for.

    Very useful for breadboard projects!

posted by pcmihnea on 09/20/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Good quality, varied lengths, durable soldering/gluing. Can't do anything without them! Would recommend more than one pack for small to medium projects.
    Cons:
None that I can think of. A few of them were stuck together when I received them due to glue used to keep the cable connected t...

Very useful as a portable, independent Android-based device!

posted by pcmihnea on 08/18/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
At the time of purchase (June 2013) this was the cheapest Android-based device that it's wasn't as a HDMI dongle/stick. That meant that it could be used independently from an TV, it had composite A/V output, two USB ports, pus it looked more professional. T...
    Cons:
The performance, maybe? It unfortunately can't step up to today's standard (when quad- and octo-core processors are more and mo...

Great micro-USB phone dock, with extra features!

posted by pcmihnea on 08/18/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
The main function of this device's internal board is a 4-port USB 2.0 hub: one port is connected to the micro-USB plug, one to the incorporated card reader, and the remaining two are accessible at the back. The great fact is how easily you can modify it: th...
    Cons:
Build quality could be better. Also, it has an annoying multi-color LED (usually found in cheap "disco" toys) that's ...

    Grat for 11-pin MHL devices!

posted by pcmihnea on 08/18/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
If you're a proud owner of an Samsung Galaxy S3 (i9300), or another 11-pin-based MHL device, you may notice that the standard, 5-pin MHL-to-HDMI adapter don't work at all. As a solution, you can buy an 11-pin to 5-pin adapter, but that will result in a adap...
    Cons:
    1. The color, maybe? 2. Don't think that there is something special about the chip used inside; is the same, first generation ...
