    Good battery

posted by ratlab on 03/02/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:less than 1 day

    Pros:
Came charged at 10.07V (I tested it with a multimeter). The battery came wrapped in plastic to protect it from the elements, so it is in perfect cosmetic as well as functional condition.
    Cons:
None that I can tell so far, but any mAh capacity at this price is a bargain.

    Passable Tape

posted by ratlab on 02/13/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
It's electrical tape. The vinyl is an insulator, so you can apply it over exposed wires to prevent shorts. Each roll is individually wrapped, so dirt will stay out until you're ready to use it.
    Cons:
The width of the strip is slightly narrower than standard rolls, so you'll end up doing more turns to wrap a length of wire. T...

    Small Zip Ties

posted by ratlab on 02/13/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
$1.99 is a fair price for this amount of zip ties, no matter the size. I've used over a dozen of them and they all work great. Daisy chaining them together can extend their operational length.
    Cons:
They're thin in all respects, so they won't hold much more weight than cables.

    Bargain

posted by ratlab on 02/13/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Each cloth comes individually packaged in a zipper bag. There are a variety of colors, and none of them are appalling. The thread count is pretty low on these, so you need to do a lot more buffing to clean eyeglasses. They do not leave scratches, which i...
    Cons:
They are a little undersized. My hands are big, so wiping down eyeglasses and my monitor can leave smudges where the cloth was...

    Visual Deterrant Only

posted by ratlab on 01/28/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
The orange trim on the keys and lock are obviously meant to imitate a name-brand unit. It comes with two keys, so you can have a spare.
    Cons:
I took a pair of diagonal cutters (a.k.a dykes, wire snippers, cable cutters) to the steel. I was able to cut through with eff...

Strong glue in a leaky bottle

posted by ratlab on 11/30/2008 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Seems to be good CA glue, just like Super Glue. Seems to bond quickly. Can't ask for much more from this type of adhesive. The bottle came in a little box, which helped catch all of the leaking fluid.
    Cons:
The bottle did leak in transit. There's dried glue all around the outside of the bottle. Since the top it still sealed, this ...

Lots of threadlocker for the price

posted by ratlab on 11/30/2008 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
It's a very large bottle, although it only comes half full. It didn't leak in transit. The applicator tip is large enough that you can cover a lot of threads if you need to. The fluid is also very thick, so you get a lot of control in spotting it onto bo...
    Cons:
Usually red threadlocker is almost permanent, but this solution cures to something gummy and removable. Still, it's a good all...

    Nice set of plastic tools

posted by ratlab on 11/30/2008 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Six pieces, some duplicates. They're the right shape and form to do work on your consumer electronics. Any sort of screen or button repair and you'll be glad to have these in your toolbox. The prybars are especially useful.
    Cons:
The plastic is pretty soft. In the positive sense, they're even more resistant to scratching your device. On the downside, it...

    My optical mouse hates it

posted by ratlab on 11/30/2008 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:less than 1 day

    Pros:
Comes in a nice package. Rolls out smoothly and sticks to the table. It's plastic so you can wash it to clean it.
    Cons:
My Logitech optical mouse hates this surface. There's a directional grain that seems to confuse the sensor and cause erratic c...

    Better than included multimeter leads

posted by ratlab on 11/30/2008 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
I bought these to replace the test leads that came included with the meter I purchased here on DX. These ones definitely have more insulation around the wires. They're also longer and have a very sharp tip. The strain relief on the connectors is pretty s...
    Cons:
Some of the plastic molding isn't cast well. Since there's no breaks in the insulation, I'm going to chalk this up as a cosmet...
