Surprising how strong these little magnets are

posted by strykeroz on 10/22/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
These magnets are very compact yet strong enough to hold quite decent weights. I was initially concerned that for the price they wouldn't be up to the task but there's no need to worry - they are very strong - surprisingly so for their size.
    Cons:
None that I've found so far, though it's worth finding a place to keep them that's far from wristwatches, magnetic media and an...

Get one of these for each of your cameras

posted by strykeroz on 10/22/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
Useful device especially when setting up your camera on a tripod on uneven ground. Rapid confirmation that you've got your horizon reasonably straight, and helps confirm that your tripod is right in every elevation for panning situations including panorama...
    Cons:
Not too easy to see the bubble in low light but the usefulness outweighs any downside.

Upgrade your inline switches for dust and weather resistance

posted by strykeroz on 06/01/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Quite robustly constructed Rubber seals around switch and where your wires go into the case Strain relief clamps at both sides where wires enter Standard 3-terminal rocker switch means you could use solder or crimp terminals to connect Switch can be popped ...
    Cons:
Light is integrated in switch, so didn't see an easy way to retrofit a light for a lesser voltage (eg for 12V DC application)

Cheap yet very functional switch for lamp repairs, camp lighting etc

posted by strykeroz on 06/01/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Easy to use in either AC or DC applications. Simply crimp terminals onto your wire. Quite a compact and pleasant design looks like an upgrade for many of the switches standard on lamps that you might need to replace
    Cons:
Only switches one line so when replacing some switches it will be necessary to join, solder and insulate one wire. Rocker switc...

Easy to use bright display requiring few pins

posted by strykeroz on 05/30/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
Very bright display that is easy to interface to Arduino or even ATTiny since it only needs two pins to operate. Arduino TM1640 library also suits ATTiny45/85 so you can mount the small microcontroller on the back of the display even with spare pins for sw...
    Cons:
7 segment displays make some characters not really possible, but this is still great for numeric values, and most alphas

Does the job, but don't expect a direct replacement

posted by strykeroz on 05/26/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Great price, and a range of colours. Fit into the 3DS slot perfectly though a little more difficult to remove than the original. Comes with 3 spares...so never be without a stylus again
    Cons:
These are a fixed length, so don't extend like the one that comes in your 3DS. For this reason they're shorter than the one yo...

Does the job perfectly, you'll need to buy a screwdriver

posted by strykeroz on 05/26/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Priced well, also retail blister packaging means it's well protected for delivery
    Cons:
Included screwdriver didn't fit any of the screws on the Nintendo 3DS it is intended for.

If you're pulling phones apart - grab a few of these

posted by strykeroz on 01/26/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
Very useful prying tools. Soft plastic helps prevent damage to your phone's case. Very low price so you can afford to keep a few sets (they will be damaged as you use them so you'll need to probably anyway)
    Cons:
You will need more than one set if you're doing this sort of thing often. Small pieces of these tools can sometimes break off s...

    Great value and so useful

posted by strykeroz on 08/31/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
Compact yet large enough for useful test circuits for small projects. These are quite well constructed and unlike some others I've had the holes line up fine with the contacts underneath. You can lock multiple units together for larger projects and there'...
    Cons:
    None that I've found
