What's the deal with these bike battery packs?

  • rickajho Tuesday, August 11, 2015 7:34 AM Reply
Has anyone taken one apart to see what's in there? Where I'm going with this is: is there a real charging circuit in there designed for a series/parallel battery pack? Or do they just apply voltage/current, relying on each battery's protection circuit to stop charging?

This question is stopping me dead in my tracks from getting a bike light with an 8.4 v series/parallel battery pack. Having used LiOn batteries for years, and knowing the potential dangers of ICR chemistry batteries if they are abused, I wouldn't personally touch one of these packs if it has no real charging controller circuit in the pack. The setups look like they are supplied with a dumb AC/DC adapter and I'm betting it's applying voltage/current directly to the batteries - no electronics involved.

Anyone know? If there is a bike light out there that allowed you to insert your own 18650 pack batteries I would be all over that. The only one I have seen here with that feature is sku 203530 but it's only a single battery 18650/26650 model.

There was a 4x18650 (empty) battery pack that was given as a fault finders gift a few months ago. I don't remember the brand, but I think @sheepish won one and might be able to give you the sku #.
NO! I don't know why DX screwed up the site so badly.
    Ask them.

We got sku.355547, an 8.4V pack which includes a USB output as well.

There have been a few similar products posted since then, such as sku.396777 (red), sku.396773 (blue), sku.396316, sku.396314.

Thanks guys - that is the concept I want and the sku 355547 design looks best. That massive thumb screw on top means no tools required to swap batteries either. I think the price is a little high, but it's still worth it to me if it means I can use my own Xtar charger and really know what is really going on with the batteries and the battery charging process.

I now see they are listed under Electrical & Tools » Batteries. That is pretty obvious - I guess - but I would bet 99/100 people would be getting these for bike lights and... nope - you will never find them there - with the bike lights sold without battery packs. Some of this stuff that can cross multiple categories can be hard to locate on the sight.

I got a new forum added just for biking questions ~ http://club.dx.com/forums/forums.dx/forum.-285

If you don't need the usb plug, I would advise getting one without it because I ended up having to wrap it up and make the end waterproof for riding in the rain.
DX either no longer have that one, or the usual DX search sucks.

Yeah I saw that. It was empty so I didn't know where that forum was going which is why I posted here.

Maybe this would work as a cover: http://www.dx.com/p/37238

It would help if they showed something inserted into it though to better judge what if fits.
