So hi! are you looking to buy your first (high powered) laser? there are some considerations to take, did you know? lets start:

    - Why do you need a laser?
    - What power/color to buy?
    - Do you know the safety issues that a laser have?
    - Do your country allow (HP) lasers?

    so lets start...

How do we choose a laser?
    By nanometers (color):
    405nm: Purple
    445nm: Blue
    475nm: Royal Blue
520/555/570: Green (555: peak sensitivity of human eye. VERY green.)
    650/670nm: Red
    808nm: Near infrared
    1064nm: Complete infrared

Lower nanometers (-470): Can activate "glow-in-the-dark" things, Cathodic ray tubes (old televisions), etc.

Green nanometer (555) is about 6 times more visible than red and blue lasers. Goes very, very far, very low potent lasers are very visible.

Highter nanometers (+640): burn things 3x easer than green and blue lasers ("hotter nanometer").

Invisible nanometer (+808, not selled at DX): burn things 3x easer with 100mw even. VERY DANGEROUS because the human eye can't see that laser, will not blink, and will just blind. I had a 100mw 808nm, could light matches immediatly (you need a camera to see the laser).

    OR by power:
1mw: Good for messing with cats (better vision than dogs).
5mw: Good for messing with dogs/cats, even from far away.
let's talk about this a little later.

    - Why do you need a laser?
Think of what you can do with a laser. Do you want to just point at the wall, point at the sky and see the beam, or just fuss with your cat/dog? I'll make a little list of what you need for each function:

    1mw (any color): AUS limit.
5mw (any color): EUA limit. Good for fussing with cat/dog (any color)

5mw Red: Goes somehow far (~60m?) and is good for fussing with animals. They like it, and this is not dangerous, unless exposed to eye ~1 minute. Can cause blind spots on the eye.
5mw Green: Goes very far (~1500m), and you can even see the beam in dark night. Good for fussing with animals. Somehow dangerous to the eye, can cause temporary (15min) blind spots on the eye if exposed some seconds (10). Can make your eyes hurt, if you look at the dot too much time.
5mw Blue: Very cool. Good to animals, and can light glow-in-the-dark stuff.

10mw Green: Goes very far (~3500m), and is more visible than 5mw. More dangerous to the eye. YOU CAN PLAY WITH YOUR PET USING THIS, SAFELY.
    10mw others: attenuated caracteristics only.

100mw Red: Instant blind if direct eye hit. Can pop black ballons and light black matches if focused. DON'T point to any animal or living thing. DON'T point to a white wall and look at the dot. Your eyes will hurt.
200mw Red: Instant blind if direct eye hit. Permanent blind spots on eye if diffused hit (never point to metallic things). Can pop ballons (dark colors are best) or light mathes. NEVER STARE AT THE DOT, ANYWHERE! Safety goggles recommended! Beam visible in night, and goes very far (400m at least).

Stronger Red (not selled at DX): Instant blind if diffused hit. Can burn most things. Never look at dot or beam (if class 4).

100mw Green: Instant blind if direct eye hit, permanent blind spots if diffused hit (never point to metallic things). Cannot pop or light anything, but goes very far (at least 900m). Very visible at night. Safety goggles recommended.

200mw Green: do not buy as your first laser. just don't. Will make instant blind spots if diffused hit (more strong than 100mw). Never play with a dog or cat with this. Just point at the roof, so they will not get close to the dot. Avoid looking at dot or beam at close distance.
Maybe burn some black things, not sure. always use protection goggles.

Stronger Green ("FIREPOINT" at DX): Will burn some things. do noy buy as first laser. will blind if stare at dot too much time. Goes VERY VERY FAR (6km 500mw). always use protection goggles.
Green Modules: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.26891 200mw module. Other modules: http://www.dealextreme.com/products.dx/category.917 other useful laser modules!

    5mw blue: Cool and safe.
10mw blue: Cool and somehow safe. Human eye does not process blue color very well, making eyes hurt.
50mw blue: I doubt it will burn even black mathes, dunno. Beware with these.
stronger blue*: always use protection goggles.

    - So, what power/color to buy?
Do you want to point far? Green 30mw. http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.469(2*aa) or http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.11018 (1*CR123A) or even http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.2526 (1*CR123A).

Do you want to mess with animals? Red 5mw. http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.9768 (3*AG13)
    or Green http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.44128 (2*aa)

Do you want to light things? Red 200mw http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.11315 (2*CR2 15270) or Green 300mw+ http://www.dealextreme.com/products.dx/category.911 (Look for FIREPOINT lasers).

Do you want to light glow-in-the-dark things? Blue lasers.
    http://www.dealextreme.com/products.dx/category.923 (most are 2*aa)

    - Do you know the safety issues that a laser have?
LASER RETINAL INJURY IS PERMANENT. The retina does not regenerate.
    img src: http://laserfx.com/BasicSafety/eyelaser.gif

Focused lasers are the worse. A focused 200mw Red are like a 1w red in a very small spot.
Never point a laser to any living thing or eyes.
Never point a green laser to neck (IR diffrates from green dot).

    - Blink Reflex
The human eye has a function called blink reflex, that will force his eyes to close in 0.1 second when a foreign thing touches his corneas/outer body of eye.
The same reflex (but called Optical Reflex) protects the eye against excessive light (accidental laser exposure) but only after 0.25 seconds. the thresholds herein stated (for humans) are for "damage before 0.25 seconds". NEVER stare at any laser, as all of they have a damage rating: the damage is only slower than a 15mW one, as 10mW WILL blind if pointed intentionally on eye, and 1mW WILL make a blind/color-blindness if stared long. All safety measures here stated takes considerations that:

-You aren't a kid that will intentionally point lasers on your own eyes (or other people/pets eyes)
-You will not burn things with a focused laser without using laser goggles
-You will treat the laser as a loaded lethal weapon ready to fire.
-You are reading this link intending to buy DealExtreme lasers, not special manufactured lasers (that are usually overpowered, even when they 5mW outputting 60~70mW) or very scammer lasers sellers (that overpower their 1mW lasers to make them burn matches and your retinas).

    - Do your country allow (HP) lasers?
Look in the forums or others users opinions. EUA 5mw are ok, 6mw are not. AUS 1mw are ok, 2mw not.

*I have a custom built 1200mw 445nm (blue) at home. Burns tru anything, and I always use safety goggles. A diffration hit my eyes with the goggles (OD 5) and my eyes hurted ~1 hour but I ain't got blinded. Pay 30 dollars for a goggle, or 40000 dollars for futile surgeries to recover vision? Buy goggles and lasers, not only (HP) lasers.

    Damages Threshold
Human Eye Damage Threshold (DIRECT HIT): 5~10mw will make your eyes hurt a lot. 15mw will surely blind BEFORE THE BLINK REFLEX TAKE ACTION.
Human Eye Damage Threshold (DIFFRACTION): point a 500mw green laser at a white wall and stare at it is not safe.
Animals Eye Damage Threshold (DIRECT HIT): most cats and dogs have a 60mw damage threshold. They are toughier as they descend from savage cats and dogs. BUT SHINING LASERS AT ANIMALS EYES IS NOT RECOMMENDED!
Animals Eye Damage Threshold (DIFFRACTION): pointing any color (RED GREEN OR BLUE) 50mw laser at the floor for the animal to follow and catch is fairly safe.

Hey, quick question. Your information is very well detailed but I would just like to make sure.

    I've ordered two lasers:

"Human Eye Damage Threshold (DIRECT HIT): 5~10mw will make your eyes hurt a lot. 15mw will surely blind. "

So if I were to get a direct hit, what would the outcome be? 15mW will surely blind, will 5mW cause permanent blind spots?

Also, I am worried about the infrared because people are saying this has been measured at ~30mW.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll be sure to tip :D
